English riding was developed over centuries in Europe most of which was geared toward hunting, jumping and war.

The modern English type of horse is usually tall, can range from a more thickly built warmblood (a cross breed horse with draft and saddle horse breeding) to a thinner, lighter Thoroughbred and ponies for the younger horse people. These horses are suitable for competitive jumping, Dressage and Cross Country.

In learning English riding, with dedication, the rider will become competent at the; walk, collected walk, trot, collected trot, extended trot, canter, collected canter, hand gallop and gallop. Additional skills are; counter movements, shoulder movements, lateral movements, turn on the hind and fore, rating speed, judging distance, balance, form, halt, half halt, backing etc.

The rider will also acquire an understanding of the English tack, various types of English saddles, different English bits, and the distinct English bridles.
